The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) intends to provide adequate assurances that food imported into the U.S. is produced in a manner that provides the same level of public health protection as foods produced domestically. The Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) requires that importers perform certain risk-based activities to verify that food imported into the U.S. has been produced in a manner that meets all appliable U.S. food safety standards.
FSMA holds importers accountable for verifying that their foreign suppliers are implementing modern, prevention-oriented food safety practices and achieving the same level of food safety as domestic growers and processors. Unlike some other FSMA inspections, FDA is authorized to perform FSVP inspections virtually, as FSVP inspections are records inspections. In order to help with compliance, FDA has made available a list of records, which can be used in order to comply with the FSVP regulations.
