The ASTA 2020 Regulatory Workshop will be held as a series of virtual educational and networking sessions in October.  Here is where you can find the most update information on registration, sessions, speakers, sponsorship and more.

The 2020 Regulatory Workshop will build on the success of the ASTA Online series with timely updates from government officials and other key experts on FDA requirements, the impact of COVID-19 on the spice sector, state requirements impacting spices (Prop 65 and NY State), special topics in trade, and more.

All sessions will be held 2:00pm-3:30pm ET unless otherwise noted.

Federal Agency Updates – 2:00pm-3:30pm ET
Hear from U.S. federal agency representative on critical regulatory updates impacting the spice industry.

FDA Regulatory Update for the Spice Industry
Speaker: Sharon Mayl, FDA
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will share an update on FDA’s current priorities, including forthcoming regulations on traceability and laboratory accreditation, FSMA guidance, the new FDA Era of Food Safety Blueprint, COVID-19 priorities, and updates on FSMA inspections as the agency begins FSVP and IA inspections.

CDC Update on COVID-19 Best Practices for the Food Industry
Speaker from COVID-19 Food Systems Work Group, CDC (Invited)
This session will include a speaker from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who will present on CDC guidance for critical infrastructure workers in the food sector.

Join ASTA President Larry Lichter and Executive Director Laura Shumow for Lattes with Larry and Laura!Connect with old friends, network with colleagues at other ASTA member companies, and meet new members of the spice industry. This session is also a great opportunity to and share what’s on your mind and any ideas for how ASTA can support the industry. Feel free to use this time to casually raise questions about ASTA for the ASTA Board of Directors, which will be addressed at the October 15th ASTA Members Only Session.

State Regulatory Updates - 2:00pm-3:30pm ET
This session will cover state issues and regulations that are relevant to the spice industry.

California Prop 65 Update
Speaker: Will Wagner, Associate, Greenberg Traurig
California Proposition 65 requires warning labeling on products containing certain listed chemicals. The list continues to evolve, with the addition of new chemicals and the establishment of new safe harbor levels. This talk will address how these requirements impact the spice industry and what spice companies can do to ensure compliance and reduce liability.

New York State Update on Lead in Spices
Speaker: Jon Greenberg, Division of Food Safety & Inspection, NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets
The New York State Department of Health will speak about updated information on the New York state policy on lead, cadmium, and arsenic in spices.

Special Topics in Trade for the Spice Industry – 2:00pm-3:30pm ET

Navigating Trade Requirements: Focus on Organic and Pesticide MRLs
Speaker: Maile Hermida, ASTA General Counsel, Hogan Lovells
This session will focus on how to navigate pesticide requirements within organic equivalency agreements. Although a food can be certified organic and imported into the US under an organic equivalency agreement, the same food may also contain a pesticide that does not have a US approved tolerance, and so the food is considered adulterated in the US and cannot be imported. This session will provide tips on how to make sense of seemingly conflicting regulations.

Cross-Border Trade:  Updates & Trends Impacting US & Global Supply Chains
Speaker: Shawn Jarosz, TradeMoves LLC
This presentation will encompass an overview of cross-border trade issues impacting the spice industry, as well as trends and a look ahead. What are the opportunities and challenges resulting from US trade policy and actions including GSP, US-EU trade disputes, Section 301 tariffs from China, USMCA and other free trade agreements in negotiations and on the horizon.
